Through Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Strategic Growth Initiative funding (2015-2017) this project offers a plan to attract more talent to small and mid-sized Michigan farms through two steps. First, it assessed challenges affecting agricultural talent with focus on understanding opportunities and barriers to employment such as cultural perspectives, wage stereotypes, lack of ability to “move up”, and transportation, etc. Secondly, it developed a plan for addressing these challenges with strong focus on marketing and experiential education. This information was compiled into a toolkit such that employers, educational entities and talent may use as a reference. A pilot model for experiential education was also developed including communication and outreach strategies.
